La Sopraelevata (an elevated highway) cuts through the Genoa’s old town. The contrast of walking around the old caruggi, only to turn and see a car driving by was quite a surprise.

Built in 1965, there is a lot of mixed feelings about this highway in Genoa. You can’t avoid seeing it cutting through the city. The highway goes right around the Porto Antico, right along the historical old town. Reading about it the nicknames range from The Splendid Monster to the The Urban Monster. Or just… utile splendido mostro.
